A bold, graphic take on the classic Chinese fish jar. A single plump koi swims across the crackle-glazed body — its head, fins and trailing water plants rendered in deep cobalt blue, while the scales are filled in glowing copper red (youlihong), a difficult underglaze technique prized by collectors.
The same fish motif repeats in miniature on the domed lid, which is topped with a small pointed finial. The cream-colored crackle glaze runs over the whole jar, giving the blue-and-red fish a vintage, hand-drawn feel — like a folk kiln piece pulled from an old kiln site.
In Chinese, “fish” (鱼 yú) sounds exactly like “surplus/abundance” (余 yú), so a fish jar is the classic gift for Lunar New Year, housewarmings and business openings — wishing the receiver abundance all year round.
