This iron-red ginger jar is a modern interpretation of the classic Chinese “melon jar” (冬瓜罐) traditionally made as a wedding dowry piece. Set against a warm, creamy white porcelain body, the entire surface is densely hand-painted in soft vermilion iron-red — curling peony vines, scrolling foliage and round, full-petaled peonies winding their way around every curve.
At the heart of each face sits the unmistakable “囍” (Double Happiness) character, rendered in bold, even red strokes. It is flanked by two blooming peonies — symbols of prosperity, honour and a happy marriage — while a neat band of vertical petal motifs circles the foot, echoing the structure of antique Qing-dynasty porcelain.
The matching domed lid is painted to continue the floral scroll, and is crowned with a slender, pointed finial that lifts it off easily and adds a graceful silhouette when set on a shelf.
How to Style It
- Console / entryway — place one on a wooden console with a pair of brass candlesticks for an instant Chinoiserie moment.
- Bookshelf decor — stack beside white ceramics, old books and a small framed print.
- Wedding or anniversary gift — the Double Happiness motif makes it a heartfelt present for newlyweds, housewarmings or Chinese New Year.
- As a pair — style two symmetrically on a mantel, sideboard or dining table for a balanced, curated look.
